The light heavyweight division saw a late shuffle on Monday when the UFC confirmed a new opponent for its Abu Dhabi card. Magomed Ankalaev (20-2-1, 1 NC) will now meet Bogdan Guskov (18-3-1) in the headlining bout at Etihad Arena on July 25, replacing the originally scheduled Khalil Rountree. While the promotion offered no official explanation for Rountree's departure, Ankalaev indicated the fighter pulled out due to injury.
Guskov Steps Up on Short Notice
Guskov's acceptance of the fight required him to exit a previously scheduled rematch with Jan Blachowicz, set for UFC Belgrade on August 1. That bout had already been postponed once from UFC 328 following a Blachowicz injury. The Polish veteran subsequently released a statement addressing the situation.
> "UFC offered me to fight Ankalaev first. I wasn't sure if I'm gonna make the weight. After a couple of hours I confirmed the fight without any catchweight but it was a done deal with Guskov. So now I'm waiting for a new opponent for the [UFC Belgrade] Fight Night."
Blachowicz claimed he was the UFC's first choice to step in but expressed concern about making weight in the compressed timeframe, clearing the path for Guskov's elevation.
High Stakes for Guskov
The matchup carries significant ranking implications for Guskov, currently positioned at No. 12 in the MMA Fighting Global Rankings. A victory would propel him into the top five and represent a major career breakthrough against elite competition. Ankalaev, ranked No. 3, brings undisputed credentials at 205 pounds following his recent struggles at the championship level.
Ankalaev's Recent Setback
The Russian fighter captured the light heavyweight title by dethroning Alex Pereira at UFC 320 last October. However, "Poatan" reclaimed his crown in their immediate rematch, handing Ankalaev his first setback since joining the UFC in March 2018. The Abu Dhabi engagement marks Ankalaev's first contest following that championship loss.
Guskov's Track Record
Guskov and Blachowicz have a complicated history. They fought to a majority draw at UFC 323, and the promotion had booked them twice more to definitively settle their rivalry. With both now pursuing separate paths, Guskov's opportunity against Ankalaev represents a chance to vault past his previous stalemate and establish himself among the division's elite contenders.
