Founding (2011)
ONE Championship was founded in 2011 in Singapore by Chatri Sityodtong, a Thai-born entrepreneur and Muay Thai practitioner, alongside sports executive Victor Cui, who served as the promotion's first CEO. Originally launched under the name ONE Fighting Championship (ONE FC), the organization was created with the stated goal of building a pan-Asian combat-sports platform that could capitalize on the region's deep martial-arts heritage and large population. The promotion is operated by parent company Group ONE Holdings, headquartered in Singapore. The inaugural event, ONE Fighting Championship 1: Champion vs. Champion, took place on 3 September 2011 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium. From the outset, ONE emphasized Asian markets, signing regional fighters and securing broadcast deals across Asia, positioning itself in contrast to the North American-centered model of established promotions such as the UFC.
Early growth and regional expansion (2012-2015)
Through its early years, ONE expanded its event calendar across Southeast and East Asia, holding cards in countries including Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, China, Thailand, and Myanmar. The promotion built a roster of crown titles across multiple weight classes and cultivated regional stars, often drawing on local national audiences to fill arenas. In 2015 the organization rebranded from ONE Fighting Championship to ONE Championship, signaling a broadened identity beyond mixed martial arts alone. During this period ONE secured wide-reaching television distribution, claiming broadcast reach across numerous Asian territories, and acquired regional promotions and assets to consolidate its market position. Fighters such as Filipino lightweight Eduard Folayang and Singaporean champion Angela Lee emerged as marquee names who helped anchor the promotion's appeal in their home markets.
Diversification into stand-up sports (2016-2019)
From the mid-2010s, ONE Championship distinguished itself by moving beyond mixed martial arts to promote multiple combat disciplines under one banner, including Muay Thai, kickboxing, and submission grappling, each with their own championships and rule sets. This multi-sport strategy allowed the promotion to sign elite strikers and grapplers who would not traditionally compete in MMA, and to stage hybrid events featuring several disciplines on a single card. The promotion attracted high-profile signings from the striking world, including former Glory and K-1 competitors, and recruited established names such as kickboxer Giorgio Petrosyan and Muay Thai standout Nong-O Hama / Nong-O Gaiyanghadao. ONE also signed prominent MMA talent including former UFC and ONE flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson and former UFC and Bellator lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez in a notable cross-promotional fighter trade with the UFC in 2018.
International events and U.S. expansion (2019-2024)
ONE Championship pursued a more global footprint toward the end of the 2010s and into the 2020s. It staged its first events in Japan, including cards at the Ryogoku Kokugikan and later the Saitama Super Arena, and continued to grow its Muay Thai and kickboxing divisions, particularly through events held in Bangkok at the Lumpinee Boxing Stadium under the ONE Friday Fights / ONE Lumpinee series. The organization expanded its broadcast and streaming reach in North America, securing a U.S. television deal and building toward a debut on American soil. ONE held its first event in the United States, ONE Fight Night, in Denver, Colorado, in 2024, marking a significant step in its stated ambition to compete globally. Throughout this era the promotion weathered scrutiny over its financial position and corporate restructuring while continuing to raise investment capital.
Modern era
In the 2020s ONE Championship positioned itself as the largest combat-sports organization in Asia and one of the largest globally by event volume, distributing content across television and digital platforms to a broad international audience. Its multi-sport model, spanning MMA, Muay Thai, kickboxing, and grappling, remained a defining feature, with weekly events from venues such as Lumpinee Stadium supplementing its larger numbered and ONE Fight Night cards. Chatri Sityodtong has remained the central figure as chairman and CEO of parent Group ONE Holdings. The promotion's modern roster has featured a mix of long-tenured Asian champions and imported elite strikers and grapplers, with figures such as Rodtang Jitmuangnon in Muay Thai and Demetrious Johnson in MMA serving as flagship draws for international audiences.
