Founding (2004)

Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki (Polish for "Martial Arts Confrontation"), commonly abbreviated KSW, was established in 2004 by Martin Lewandowski and Maciej Kawulski. The two met in 2002, when Lewandowski was managing the Marriott Hotel in Warsaw and Kawulski was organizing one of Poland's largest sports expositions; both came from martial arts backgrounds. Roughly eighteen months after that meeting, the promotion staged its first event, KSW 1, on February 27, 2004, at the Marriott Hotel in Warsaw. From the outset the company was based in Warsaw and owned directly by its two founders, a structure it has retained ever since.

Tournament Era and Early Growth

In its first years KSW frequently used a tournament format, running four- and eight-man brackets that were completed across a single night. This single-event tournament structure was used through KSW 10; beginning with KSW 11, the promotion shifted toward conventional single bouts and split multi-fight tournaments across separate cards. KSW 11 also marked the start of regular live broadcasting on the Polsat and Polsat Sport television channels in Poland, which significantly broadened the promotion's domestic reach and helped establish it as the country's leading MMA organization.

Rise of Domestic Stars

KSW's growth through the late 2000s and 2010s was driven by a core of recurring stars. Mamed Khalidov, a Chechen-born fighter based in Poland, became the promotion's defining athlete, holding both the middleweight and light heavyweight titles and compiling a long unbeaten run against international opposition. Former World's Strongest Man winner Mariusz Pudzianowski debuted in 2009 and became one of the promotion's biggest box-office draws despite never fighting for a title. The era also saw the emergence of champions such as Tomasz Narkun, who handed Khalidov his first KSW defeat at KSW 42 in 2018, and welterweight knockout artist Roberto Soldic, who later became a two-division champion.

Stadium Scale and Attendance Record (2017)

On May 27, 2017, KSW staged KSW 39: Colosseum at the PGE Narodowy (National Stadium) in Warsaw, drawing a reported 57,766 spectators. The figure stood as one of the largest live attendances in MMA history, behind only Pride Shockwave 2002, and surpassed the previous Western record set by UFC 193. The card was headlined by Mamed Khalidov and Borys Mankowski and featured Mariusz Pudzianowski, underscoring the promotion's ability to fill stadiums with a mix of sporting and entertainment-driven matchups. KSW also ran several events abroad during this period, including shows in the United Kingdom at venues such as Wembley Arena.

Modern Era and International Expansion

In the 2020s KSW expanded its broadcast footprint and event calendar. In November 2021 it announced a long-term partnership with the streaming service Viaplay, increasing output to roughly twelve events per year and distributing them across Polish, Nordic, Dutch and English-language markets. Phil De Fries emerged as the promotion's most dominant titleholder, building a multi-year heavyweight reign with numerous defenses, while French fighter Salahdine Parnasse became one of its leading multi-division champions. KSW continued to run events in additional countries including the Czech Republic, France, Ireland and Croatia, established a Hall of Fame in 2023, and in February 2024 staged XTB KSW Epic, its first event mixing MMA with other combat formats such as boxing. Throughout these changes the promotion remained privately owned by founders Lewandowski and Kawulski.
