Founding (2000-2003)

DEEP was established in 2000 by Shigeru Saeki, a former sports photojournalist who had also worked as Public Relations Director for Pride Fighting Championships. The organization originally operated under the name "Deep 2001," and its inaugural event was held on January 8, 2001. The promotion was based in Japan, with operations centered in Nagoya. In 2003 the name was shortened from "Deep 2001" to simply "Deep." Female competitors appeared on a DEEP card for the first time at the promotion's 13th event on July 13, 2003, an early sign of the organization's later involvement in women's MMA.

Subcontractor to Pride and talent development (2003-2009)

Beginning in September 2003, DEEP took on the role of a subcontractor for Pride Fighting Championships, which was operated by Dream Stage Entertainment (DSE). This arrangement coincided with the launch of the Pride Bushido series, which emphasized the lighter middleweight and lightweight divisions, and DEEP was tasked with developing Japanese fighters in those weight classes. As a result, the promotion functioned as a feeder organization, with fighters such as Ryo Chonan and Ikuhisa Minowa building their early records in DEEP before advancing to larger and more prominent promotions. Over time the promotion also hosted international talent, including Korean fighters who later moved on to the UFC.

Cage era and continued operation (2009-2013)

On December 19, 2009, DEEP introduced a UFC-style enclosed cage for its newly branded Cage Impact events, marking a shift away from the ring format traditionally associated with Japanese MMA. The promotion maintained a high volume of events through this period; by April 16, 2013 it had staged roughly 194 events comprising more than 2,200 individual bouts, all held within Japan. This output reflected DEEP's position as one of Japan's most active and durable domestic promotions during a period when several larger Japanese organizations, including Pride and later DREAM, had ceased operations.

Deep Jewels and the modern era (2013-present)

On May 25, 2013, the independent all-female promotion Jewels announced it would cease operating as a standalone company, with Shigeru Saeki assuming full direction of its activities. Its fighters and brand were transferred to a new entity, Deep Jewels, managed by DEEP, which became one of Japan's principal platforms for women's MMA. In the years that followed DEEP continued to run regular cards and reached significant milestones, including its landmark 100th main numbered event, Deep 100 Impact, which Saeki promoted as a 20th-anniversary show. The promotion has remained independently operated under Saeki, continuing to develop domestic prospects and crown champions across multiple weight classes.
